Fine fescue:

Fine fescue is a cool-season grass with deep green color. It possesses the finest grass blade of any lawn grass with an upright growth habit which creates a pleasing uniformity. Germinates rapidly and is quickly established from seed. This is a grass well adapted to cool summers and high altitudes and can do well even in cold and arid climates . It is often used in mixtures with other grasses because of an ability to blend. For instance, it is a frequent component of bluegrass mixtures because it grows well in shade or drought-dry soil. It can be used with a warm-season grass in the middle South where it provides green winter color. Has good temperature tolerance - tolerates hot and cold weather well, and has good winter hardiness. Can be used in areas that are subject to widest temperature fluctuations but should not be used in the deep south where subject to extreme heat. Has the best drought tolerance for a cool-season grass, can go dormant in summer if irrigation is withheld, upon return of moisture supply it will green up again.. It is shade tolerant - most shade tolerant of all grasses but needs some sun - best cool season grass for dry, shady lawns. Has moderate wear resistance - grass blades are non-succulent and hardy making an good play surface, but does not recover well from severe injury.
